Born in 1954 in Vienna. After studying German philology, philosophy, and political science, he taught literature and literary theory in Brazil and became an acknowledged essayist and novelist. In 2017 he received the German Book Prize for Die Hauptstadt [The Capital] and in 2023 he was awarded the European Book Prize for its sequel, Die Erweiterung [The Enlargement].
